Tax guide

United Kingdom · Tax guide

The UK tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April. Country of residence within the UK matters for employment-income rates.

Personal income tax

For 2026/27 the standard Personal Allowance is £12,570, subject to eligibility and income-based withdrawal. Scotland has separate bands for non-savings, non-dividend income. An income-tax estimate must also distinguish National Insurance, pension deductions and other payroll deductions.

Filing & deadlines

For the 2025/26 return, the ordinary online Self Assessment and balancing-payment deadline is 31 January 2027. This is not the deadline for 2026/27 income. Special notices and payments on account can create additional dates; use HMRC’s deadline guidance.

Business and scope

Corporation Tax has a 25% main rate and a 19% small-profits rate, with marginal relief where eligible. Profit limits are adjusted for associated companies and short accounting periods. A company’s accounting period differs from the individual tax year.

Income tax is an annual liability estimate, not a simulation of a tax-code-specific PAYE payslip. NI and loan deductions use each monthly payment, including the bonus. Pension percentage applies to all pay or the monthly qualifying-earnings band; choose your actual scheme, not an assumed default. Salary sacrifice must comply with minimum-wage rules. Pension saving is deducted once from take-home income; employer NI is shown separately and excludes employer pension contributions and Employment Allowance. No student-loan refund or loan-balance cap is assumed.
